The Important Book

The Important Book by Margaret Wise Brown was a theme that we used throughout our school year. The year began with me reading this book to them and asking them to decide what the most important attribute about them was. As part of my social curriculum, I talked to them about how they were always able to change who they were and who people saw them as by their actions. The children made a re-write and enjoyed reading about their classmates all year long.

At the very end of the year the children made a book for my next year’s class. The Important Thing about Ms. Dolan was not only fun for the children to make but truly allowed me to see myself through their eyes.

The few weeks that we were asked to do state testing; the other 2nd grade teacher and I dressed up like pizza men and completed an entire pizza unit. The children talked about “pizza man” all year long. Some of the children wrote in their journals that testing wasn’t that bad because pizza man was more fun. That was what we were hoping for!
